Torture ever an acceptable method of obtaining information Free Essays

Is torture ever an acceptable method of obtaining information ? BY Kvrm 234 Is torture ever an acceptable method of obtaining information? For most of us, our gut Instinct Is to say ‘no’ and studies have shown that Information obtained by the use of torture is unreliable. However, imagine a hypothetical situation where a terrorist group has planted a bomb and the government caught one of its members. This captured terrorist will only admit to planting a bomb In a high traffic area. We will write a custom essay sample on Torture ever an acceptable method of obtaining information or any similar topic only for you Order Now Would that convince you to use torture? Or what if a terrorist captured your family and took them to a secret location. Like the bomb scenario, the authorities have managed to capture one of the terrorists but he won’t give up the location. Would you have any qualms about using torture to extract the information, even if that information might be faulty? Here’s a news story clip about the effectiveness (or In this case the Ineffectiveness) of torture: It’s become the conventional wisdom that the tortured will say anything to make the torture stop, and that â€Å"anything† need not be truthful as long as it is what the torturers want to hear. But years worth of studies In neuroscience, as well as new research, suggest that here are, in addition, fundamental aspects of neurochemistry that increase the chance that information obtained under torture will not be truthful. The backstory. The Inspector general of the CIA last month released a 2004 report on the interrogation of A1 Qaeda suspects. As my colleague Mark Hosenball reported, it and other internal documents (which Cheney called on the CIA to release, believing they would back his claim) do not show that torture worked. In fact, The New York Times reported, the documents â€Å"do not refer to any specific interrogation methods and do not assess their effectiveness. Scientists do not pretend to know, in any individual case, whether torture might extract useful Information. But as neurobiologist Shane O’Mara of the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience in Dublin explains in a paper in the Journal Trends in Cognitive Science called â€Å"Torturing the Brain,† â€Å"the use of such techniques appears motivated by a folk psychology that Is demonstrably incorrect. Solid scientific evidence on how repeated and extreme stress and pain affect memory and executive functions (such as planning or forming intentions) suggests these techniques are unlikely to do anything other than the opposite of that ntended by coercive or ‘enhanced’ interrogation. As you can see, torture is unreliable. How to cite Torture ever an acceptable method of obtaining information, Papers

Life changing event free essay sample

There have been many events that have made impacts in my life, but the birth of my younger brother, Jonathan, was the most life changing. My family rushed to the hospital when my mother knew she was about to have my little brother. We waited eagerly in the hospital picturing what he would look like. Once we got news that the delivery was safe and we could go into the room to see my mom and newborn brother, my smile grew from cheek to cheek. I knew, at that moment, that my life would never be the same. First of all, I knew that having a new person around the house was going to make my life more difficult; I was correct. I became the â€Å"go to† person for every chore or plead for assistance that one could think of. Not only did I gain an extended list of chores, but I also had to share all of my things and for a nine year old, that was the hardest thing in the world; I wanted all of my things to myself. We will write a custom essay sample on Life changing event or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page As Jonathon got older, I was unwillingly forced to let him play with my new toys and video games. I got used to that stipulation, but the thing I struggled with the most was having to share my quality time with my parents, with Jonathan. My mom was always consumed with tasks surrounding my brother, whether is be potty training him, playing with him, or putting him down for a nap. My father, too, was focused on my brother, but not in the same way as my mom. He was always worrying about financial issues and trying to make sure there was enough money to provide for our family. Young children are expensive, and he was no exception. Occupying myself quickly became habit and it taught me to be self-reliant. I was old enough to make my own food and do many things for myself; I did not want to do these things, but I did them anyways to take stress off of my mom. I grew up to be self-sufficient and independent and still maintain a drive for success. Young children are easily influenced and tend to look up to their older siblings for advice and guidance. Since I am the brother next closest in age to Jonathon, I quickly decided that it was my role to influence him; I wanted him to be a â€Å"younger me. † Jonathon looked up to me and often copied simple things that I did. I taught him fun face tricks like sticking his tongue out and crossing his eyes, though always denying it when my mother suspiciously asked, â€Å"Where did he learn to do this? When he learned to talk, he swiftly picked up on my family’s joking manner. He got his sarcasm from me, though. Although I taught him numerous amounts of substandard manners, I also taught him many lessons that would be beneficial to him in his future. I realized that I needed to show Jonathon what it was like to be a leader. In teaching him, I discovered more about myself; I figured out that there were people that I would encounter in life that would need guidance and that I would need to be the one to help them. Having a younger brother gave me a new friend that I wanted to keep safe and be there for through all of the ups and downs. He showed me how to love and be selfless. After going through stages of dejection and frustration because of the loss of attention from my parents toward me, I became happy again because I realized that I had the most important job I could have. I was a brother and I had to stick by Jonathan even in the hardest of times. His wellbeing became more important than my own selfish needs. I thank him for teaching me how to let go of things that I wanted in order to make space for things that other people needed. Throughout the first ten years of his life, he has shown me that there are things in the world that are more important than being upset because I have to share my video games or frustrated because I have to make my own food. I now treasure the moments when Jonathon asks me to play with him or when he wants to show me one of his accomplishments on a game or from school. Nothing is more important than the people who you are able to influence and help become better people. Of all of the experiences that I have had and things that I have been through, Jonathan being born was the single most important event and it changed my life forever.

What did Theodore Roosevelt mean when he said the US should be the Essay

What did Theodore Roosevelt mean when he said the US should be the 'policemen' of the Caribbean - Essay Example He told Germany that the United States would act as the ‘debt collectors’ on their behalf. This meant that the US would collect all the money owed to Germany by the Caribbean islands and give it to them. When Roosevelt said that the US should be the policemen of the Caribbean, he was of the opinion that the United States should do everything in its power to assist the Caribbean in all ways possible. This was inspired by the fact that the Caribbean islands were very close neighbors of the United States (DiNunzio 143). Roosevelt, therefore, felt that it would be easy for the United States to gain full control of the Caribbean. It is clear that Roosevelt wanted to end the political unrest experienced in the Caribbean so as to gain control over its economy. He, therefore, felt that it was necessary for the US to be policemen of the Caribbean so as to eliminate the interference caused by the Europeans in the Caribbean. He felt that the Europeans interfered with the affairs of the Caribbean under the guise of collecting their debts but with the intention of ensuring their presence is felt in the area so that they would eventually take over the region (DiNunzio
